Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- ⅔ cup baking soda (for boiling)
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
- Coarse salt (for topping)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about five minutes until frothy.
- Gradually add flour and salt while stirring with a wooden spoon until combined. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about five minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise in a warm spot for about one hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide into eight equal pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes and twist into pretzel shapes.
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda cautiously. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds before placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter, sprinkling coarse salt on top while hot.
